The Basic Eyeshadow Palettes You Need

*Post originally written by Olivia J on The Unknown Beauty Blog.*

You probably have a bunch of eyeshadows in your collection yet when someone tells you (like me) you need the basic colors to really shape, contour and define the eyes; your brain begins to malfunction.  Why is it so hard to choose these colors yet you can buy every pretty palette in their cute little packaging?  The reason being basic colors are just boring to look at in a palette but THEY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT!

The Fab Four Eyeshadow post is one of the most read posts and the most popular tutorials on Into the Palette are the ones using these colors. (If you check out the web version, you will notice the popular postings to the right.)  And, from the emails I get suggesting colors from certain brands, I figured it would just be easier to suggest some good palettes instead.

The usual cosmetic lines don't offer the basic shadows in a palette mostly because they really don't have that "pan appeal" or "palette appeal".  This is why they are hard to find.  The brands I am suggesting are really pro brands.  They offer these colors because every pro needs them.  Yet, they do offer fashionable colors in their regular line if you feel the need to satiate that part of your eyeshadow hunger!

This set is a lip and eyeshadow set by MUD (Make-Up Designory) Cosmetics ($29).  The colors in this palette includes Apricot, Taupe, Espresso and Honeysuckle (pale gold) which are pretty close to the Fab Four with the exception of Honeysuckle which still is a good alternative to the usual matte ivory.  Included is a nice red lipstick to create that classic look.

I mention the greatness of this palette many times over in this post.  This Viseart Basic Matte palette for about $68 contains a collection of highly pigmented colors of the Fab Four and some warm and ash colors.  Smooth and buttery, you will never find a shadow texture close to these at a cosmetic counter.

Senna Cosmetics Snaky Palette in Contouring ($78) is probably the palette you will use with every single eyeshadow and palette you own.  With the four eyeshadows of Crystal White, Buttercream, Tobacco and Espresso you pretty much have all that you need to shape and create many illusions with your eye shape.  You also get three face colors of Lace, Mushroom and Mirage to contour anywhere on the face and eyes. No peach, you say.  You can always buy their Peach Puff ($18) eyeshadow and replace one of the colors (if you like) in the palette which is magnetized and refillable.

These are my palette picks for the essentials eyeshadow colors.  If you have any one of these to start out with, the rest of your eyeshadows will fall into place with technique and application.  Remember, every makeup artist has a basic essential palette because without it, everyone would end up looking like a clown!
