2 Vegan-Friendly Makeup Removing Products from Koh Gen Do

One of my fondest memories of Japan during my teen years were the department stores in Tokyo in the Ginza district.  I usually ended up at the many cosmetic counters gazing at the skin care and the many little colored palettes.

I could never leave empty handed, and with my purchase I would receive gifts with purchase products.  Very often these products would be cotton pads and some skin care product like a makeup remover.

Check out: Koh Gen Do Oriental Plants Lotion

I took these items for granted because they were just simple products to remove makeup.  However, as soon as I got back home to the US, I realized I wished I had an entire supply of each.  Why? Japan had a way of making the best lint-free makeup cotton pads and the most non-irritating makeup removers.  These were a given in any cosmetic line in Japan because in a sense the Japanese are obsessed with perfection.  Why remove makeup with irritating products like a lint-ball of cotton and drying makeup remover when both can be made not to irritate?  (That is how the Japanese think. Really, it is kind of anal-retentive. I should know! 😄 )

Koh Gen Do Organic Cotton Squares

Now take this, I will call it “philosophy”, one step further and make the cotton pads not only lint-free but made from pesticide-free cotton and the makeup remover made from only plant-based ingredients.  This is where Koh Gen Do steps in.

The Cotton

The Koh Gen Doh Pure Cotton Pads retail for $12 and come in a box of 60.  The way these are made allow for the liquid to soak into the cotton fibers while being sandwiched between two smooth surfaces.  When you wipe your face, the liquid will apply onto the skin only and the smooth surface of the cotton pad protects it from any lint.

The Layers of Cotton

The cotton harvested for these cotton squares are organic and unbleached.  It will have a slight yellow or brown tinge which is the usual color.  If you are of my generation, you may remember when Levi’s brought out their organic cotton jeans back in the 80’s.  This is similar.

The Cleansing Water

Koh Gen Do Cleansing Water is like a gift from the makeup goddess.  Okay, I may be slightly exaggerating (or not)!  This makeup remover comes in two sizes:

  • 10.15 oz/300ml for $39
  • 16.23 oz/480ml for $52.

Out of all the makeup removers I have tried, this one is the most non-irritating one and the one which actually makes the skin feel clean.

The Cleansing Water is formulated with Izumo spa water (onsen mizu ♨). This is also oil-free, alcohol-free, mineral oil and petrolatum free.  Plant derived and totally cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

Removal

You know how some makeup or eye removers leave that feel of product on the skin like a thin film?  OR your skin just feels so dry and tight due to having to go over the same area several times to remove the makeup?  This won't happen with Koh Gen Do.

This Cleansing Water Makeup Remover removes makeup and gives that boost of moisture at the same time.  It is very gentle for wise owl skin.  This is why Olivia Sr. loves this product.  Fast removal of makeup without any abuse of the skin!

Makeup Removed

Notice, the cotton pad is intact and look at the eye makeup it removed!

What can be used to remove can also be used to seal makeup.  Because this makeup/eye makeup remover is silicone-free, you can also use it as an eyeliner sealant or makeup mixing medium.

If you are looking for gentle, effective, plant-based, cruelty-free skin care products, then Koh Gen Do is one which deserves your attention.
