Tools and Brushes
One of my favorite brands which I reviewed way back in 2009 (Wow, time flies fast!) was Hakansson. This minimalistic makeup line created by Swedish makeup artist Katarina Hakansson stamped a major impression in my makeup memories. Not only did Katarina have a minimalistic approach to makeup, she had a minimal amount of makeup tools. Her main tools were puffs, sponges, and fingers. With just those tools she created gorgeous editorial makeup for the major fashion magazines.
If a pro makeup artist can have minimal tools, then I can too, especially now with good quality makeup sponges and puffs. One of those quality brands is Momo's Workshop.
The sets I bought are the Denim Days Rosy Parade Mini and Mini Denim Days Makeup Sponge. Both sets retail for about $17.
The Denim Days Rosy Mini consists of two mini airy mallow puffs, a stepie puff (flat one), and a velour puff. The sponges come in a small zip case.
The Mini Denim Days are 5 airy mallow puffs. Each one is housed in their own clear case with a chain to hang on your purse or somewhere. Personally, I don't want anyone to see my makeup or makeup tools hanging outside my purse.
With the exception of the velour puff, the sponges are all rubycells. Rubycell sponges are different from the PU (polyurethane) ones. Both are latex-free so if you are allergic to latex and you do know or will know eventually, these are safe to use. Rubycells are a proprietary material. It is a trademarked name and can't be used on any sponge. They are a non-absorbent material and antibacterial which makes them perfect for makeup. They can be used as a dry sponge or can be wet, but will not expand like polyurethane sponges. Rubycells provide a smooth application and can work faster than a makeup brush.
The sponges provide that quick one finger tapping application. I find my cream blushes apply more smoothly with them. The bouncy thickness and the non-absorbency smooths and blends out the application faster.
The flat one allows for more control since the finger isn't cushioned with a sponge. This is useful for concealer application around the eye area.
The velour puff is like having a cat rubbing its cheek against your face. It just feels good. The one included in the Denim Days Rosy mini is the same fabric and quality as the large ones like my croissant puffs.
One can argue that these aren't economical compared to makeup brushes. The sponges have to be replaced every few months. This becomes a quandary for me because I find these sponges easier to use than brushes now. Maybe, it is due to my age where my hands aren't as dexterous as before. Or, I just find washing brushes a bore and these sponges are easy to wash, just dip in soapy water, rinse, and dry. They do dry quickly.
No matter, a makeup junkie will always want the latest greatest tools for their makeup and right now, Momo's Workshop is one brand that has the quality and the variety of sponges for everyone.

As for Katarina Hakansson, I still admire her skills and she happens to be one of the nicest MUA's. I remember emailing her a long, long time ago about her makeup line and she actually emailed back! Nice little memory for me!
