My Philosophical Ramblings About Facial Planes

This is all about the facial planes of your face, and I know I wrote about this before. I think every makeup junkie has come across this explanation from some social media site or some book. The point of all this is to make your face into the beauty standard of the golden ratio - the perfect oval face.

To me, everyone is perfect and the only flaw is the restrictions put out by the beauty businesses. They know how to make you feel insecure. I don't want anyone to feel insecure and you should all enjoy your uniqueness.

Nose (Red)

Let's start with what is in front of your face - the nose. The nose is the center of your facial universe. It is the goal post of of all your makeup: shaping, highlighting, contouring. It is the center of attention and very important. It is also the highest plane on the face.

There is another area on the nose which is important. I call it the transitional area (light purple). It curves onto the rest of the face. This is the area which can change the angle of makeup for the cheek area and eye area. The side view shows it becomes part of the eye area. This is where the illusion of making the eyes look big occur. Yes, it is an area that the average person will not apply makeup there because it just takes a lot of it. Also, if you wear glasses, it smudges with the nose pads. Mostly, this area is just for contouring and highlighting to create a "cave" around the eye area.

Front (Yellow)

The front extends just about the end of each eyeball and just before the corner of the lips. You could say the corner of the lips are the transitional area for it. There isn't much to say about this part because it is what I call the constant of the face. Like in math, you have the variables and the constant. This area stays the same. The variables (transitional areas) are the parts that can change.

Transitional Area (Blue)

I call this the transitional area. It is the part where your face curves, your cheekbones are prominent. This area is really the fun part because it can create depth without even using contour. It is really about the placement of the makeup. Certain ideas (makeup rules) can be changed because of this curveature. What seems to be going down is really creating the shape and depth to the face. Same with the eye area.

Side (Green)

Like the nose, the ear is important. You can say that it is the center of the side for both the front and back. Think about it if you are bald, your makeup has to continue onto your scalp. However for now, we will just concentrate on the usual and not worry about the rest. The ear and the nose are pretty much in line and help in keeping the symmetrical alignment.

The Entire Face

If you think about it, your face has a large surface area. And, if you are going into your 30's and for some of us we are way passed that age, the surface area is completely different from the early 20's. The transitional area has expanded and makeup looks sparse. You have so much empty space that you think you need to do something more. Yet, it really isn't about color or new products. It is about technique and placement.

Your face has finally come into its true form and now is the time to really understand that your personality or inner beauty will add to the makeup. Less is more. Shaping the face is better than continuing with the smokey eyes that you coveted in your twenties. (Yeah, that's me!)

I know what you are thinking!

Think about it this way, just a sample example.

It is completely different!
